Penghargaan ini awalnya disebut Tony Award untuk Aktor—Drama. Penghargaannya masing-masing pertama kali diberikan kepada José Ferrer dan Fredric March di Penghargaan Tony ke-1 untuk peran mereka sebagai Cyrano de Bergerac dan Clinton Jones dalan Cyrano de Bergerac dan Years Ago. Sebelum tahun 1956, nama-nama nominasi tidak dipublikasikan;[2] Perubahan ini dilakukan oleh komite penghargaan untuk "memberikan dampak yang lebih besar pada penonton teater".[3]
