Penghargaan Fantasi Sedunia diberikan setiap tahun oleh Konvensi Fantasi Sedunia untuk seni rupa dan fiksi fantasi terbaik yang diterbitkan pada tahun kalender sebelumnya. Penghargaan tersebut dideskripsikan oleh sumber-sumber seperti The Guardian sebagai sebuah "penghargaan fantasi prestisius",[1] dan salah satu dari tiga penghargaan fiksi spekulatif terkenal, bersama dengan Penghargaan Hugo dan Penghargaan Nebula (yang menyoroti fantasi dan fiksi ilmiah).[2][3] Penghargaan Fantasi Sedunia—Novel diberikan setiap tahun untuk novel-novel fantasi yang diterbitkan dalam bahasa Inggris atau diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Nominee-nominee dan pemenang-pemenang Penghargaan Fantasi Sedunia diputuskan oleh para hadirin dan juri di acara tahun Konvensi Fantasi Sedunia (World Fantasy Convention). Sebuah jajak pendapat diposkan pada bulan Juni untuk para hadirin dari dua konferensi saat ini dan sebelumnya untuk menentukan dua finalis, dan panel lima juri menambahkan tiga nominee atau lebih pada pemungutan suara terhadap pemenang secara keseluruhan.[4][5] Panel juri biasanay terdiri dari para pengarang fantasi[6] dan dipilih setiap tahun oleh Administrasi Penghargaan Fantasi Sedunia (World Fantasy Awards Administration), yang memiliki kekuasaan untuk menentukan pemasangan.[4] Hasil akhir dipersembahkan di Konvensi Fantasi Sedunia pada akhir Oktober.[5] Para penghargaan dipersembahkan dengan sebuah piala dengan bentuk patung dada H. P. Lovecraft sampai penghargaan tahun 2015; pada acara-acara di masa mendatang, piala yang dipersembahkan akan dibuat berbeda dan belum diumumkan.[7]

Pada 42 tahun nominasi, 147 pengarang memiliki karya yang dinominasikan; 42 diantaranya menang, termasuk pemasangan. Lima pengarang menang dua kali: Gene Wolfe, dari delapan nominasi; Tim Powers, dari lima; Patricia McKillip, dari empat; Jeffrey Ford, dari tiga; dan James K. Morrow dari kedua nominasinya. Wolfe meraih nominasi terbanyak untuk seorang pengarang yang menang setidaknya sekali, sementara Stephen King meraih nominasi terbanyak tanpa kemenangan, dengan jumlah sembilan, disusul oleh Charles L. Grant dengan jumlah enam dan Jonathan Carroll dengan jumlah lima.

Gene Wolfe adalah salah satu dari hanya lima pengarang yang memenangkan kategori Penghargaan Novel Fantasi Sedunia sebanyak dua kali.
