Lalat jenjang adalah anggota dari superfamili diptera Tipuloidea, yang mencakup famili hidup Cylindrotomidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae dan Tipulidae, beserta beberapa famili punah. "Lalat jenjang musim dingin", anggota famili Trichoceridae, cukup berbeda dengan lalat jenjang pada umumnya sehingga dikeluarkan dari superfamili ini, dan ditempatkan pada sebuah pengelompokan saudara di dalam Tipulomorpha.
