Jim Henson's Creature Shop adalah perusahaan animasi dan efek khusus/visual Amerika yang didirikan pada tahun 1979 oleh Jim Henson, pencipta The Muppets. Perusahaan ini bermarkas di Hollywood, California, Amerika Serikat.
Sejarah
Jim Henson's Creature Shop awalnya didirikan sebagai kemitraan dengan ilustrator Inggris Brian Froud untuk memfasilitasi produksi The Dark Crystal.[1] Awalnya berlokasi di Hampstead, London, nama tersebut diberikan untuk membedakannya dari bengkel boneka asli Jim Henson di New York City.[1] Bengkel ini kemudian digunakan untuk produksi selanjutnya seperti Labyrinth dan The StoryTeller.[1]
Setelah kematian Henson pada tahun 1990, studio ini dipindahkan ke Camden Town dan diambil alih oleh putranya, Brian Henson.[1] Lokasi ketiga di Burbank, California, dibuka untuk melayani Hollywood, dan salah satu proyek pertamanya adalah serial televisi Dinosaurs.[2] Pengawas animatronik utamanya adalah David Barrington-Holt, yang lahir di London.[3]
Sejak The Jim Henson Company menjual hak atas merek The Muppets kepada Disney pada tahun 2004, Muppet Workshop di New York kini dikenal sebagai Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Selain efek praktis, workshop ini juga spesialis dalam “digital puppetry”, yaitu bentuk animasi komputer yang mengendalikan avatar digital menggunakan kontrol boneka manual untuk menganimasi mereka lebih cepat dan mudah daripada jika sepenuhnya digital.[2] Ini dikenal sebagai “Henson Digital Puppetry Studio” dan digunakan secara luas di televisi, termasuk seluruh seri Sid the Science Kid.[2]
Selain film, Creature Shop juga menciptakan kostum untuk acara langsung dan penampilan di taman hiburan. Mereka menciptakan kostum Smilodon “full-suit puppet” yang realistis untuk pertunjukan di Museum Sejarah Alam Los Angeles County, yang biayanya lebih dari $100.000.[4] Beberapa kostum lain yang mereka buat termasuk Beruang Kutub untuk Coca-Cola, Tony the Tiger, Shrek, Tommy dan Chuckie dari Rugrats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,[5] dan animatronika dari Five Nights at Freddy’s.
