Daftar pertama dalam seri AFI 100 Years..., AFI's 100 Years…100 Movies, merupakan daftar 100 film Amerika Serikat terbaik menurut American Film Institute berdasarkan jajak pendapat yang melibatkan 1.500 pekerja seni dan petinggi industri perfilman. Mereka menyeleksi 400 nominasi film terbaik. Daftar 100 film Amerika Serikat terbaik ini dirilis pada tahun 1998.

Presentation broadcast

Presentasi 100 film berdurasi 145 menit disiarkan di CBS. Versi 460 menitnya disiarkan dalam bentuk seri 10 bagian di TNT, dibawakan oleh Jodie Foster, Richard Gere, Sally Field, dan dinarasikan oleh James Woods. Daftar yang baru, 10th Anniversary Edition, disiarkan di CBS pada tanggal 20 Juni 2007 dan dibawakan oleh Morgan Freeman. Situs web AFI mencantumkan bahwa, "Karena alasan lisensi, siaran AFI 100 Years...100 Series tidak akan didistribusikan atau dijual dalam bentuk DVD atau VHS."[1]

Kriteria

Film dipilih berdasarkan kriteria berikut:

  1. Film cerita: Format narasi, berdurasi sedikitnya 40 menit.
  2. Film Amerika Serikat: Bahasa Inggris, dengan unsur produksi kreatif dan/atau finansial dari Amerika Serikat (beberapa film seperti The Bridge on the River Kwai, 2001: A Space Odyssey, dan Lawrence of Arabia dibuat oleh Britania namun didanai dan didistribusikan oleh studio Amerika Serikat).
  3. Sambutan kritikus: Pujian resmi dalam bentuk cetak.
  4. Pemenang penghargaan bergengsi: Memenangkan penghargaan bergengsi, termasuk penghargaan dari organisasi komunitas film dan festival film ternama.
  5. Ketenaran seiring waktu: Mencakup pendapatan bioskop sesuai inflasi, siaran televisi dan sindikasi, dan penjualan dan penyewaan kaset/CD.
  6. Torehan sejarah: Film tersebut meninggalkan jejak dalam sejarah gambar bergerak lewat inovasi teknis, perangkat narasi yang visioner, atau prestasi lainnya.
